Language barriers and cultural differences can create challenges in the collaboration between kindergarten and home. Often, these challenges stem from small practical misunderstandings, such as messages not being understood or followed up. At other times, they may involve differing views on what the kindergarten’s pedagogical work should entail, and what expectations staff and guardians have of one another. The kindergarten has a particular responsibility to include guardians in decisions and processes that affect the child’s everyday life. When this collaboration falters, it is therefore primarily the responsibility of the staff to listen to the guardians and “take a look in the mirror.” What has been said, how was it said, and in what situation? What could be done differently?
Reflection
How can the kindergarten ensure that all guardians have a genuine opportunity to participate for the child’s best interest, while also fulfilling its societal mandate and following the current framework?
