Texts from different cultures

This case-based learning recourse highlights how texts from different cultures are associated with norms and values. The case introduces some key questions to reflect upon when engaging children in book reading, conversations, and play based on texts from different cultures.

Film 1 – Challenging one’s own preconceptions

Reflection

How can you become more aware of your own attitudes while also clearly communicating to the children that there are many ways of understanding the world? Which values and assumptions do you bring with you when choosing books, and how might these influence the children?

Film 2 – Unfamiliar themes in the books

Reflection

How can you create opportunities for children to wonder, discuss and express their own thoughts about norms in different stories?

In what ways can you help children explore and question the norms they encounter, without directing them towards your own opinions?

Film 3 – Handling children’s reactions

Reflection

How can you support children in exploring different norms through play and conversations, while also developing the ability to find solutions together?
